I'm about to travel out of the US and want to avoid TSA manual inspection as much as possible. Out of the things that I want to put in my checked bags, 2 bottles of shampoo and 2 pairs of shoes are the ones I suspect will trigger the alarm. Am I right? To answer your last question: yes, many times.
If you pack them inside a small cardboard box inside a cloth-only (beside the zipper) duffel with nothing else inside the duffel and beside those items in separated boxes inside the duffel, then it's highly unlikely that they would open the bag unless you or your belongings have been blacklisted or otherwise targeted independent of the contents inside such duffel bag.
