Pretty much. Sadly, the business plan that presumed advertising supported services just did not make it. Most that tried this have/are moving to a subscription model or have gone out of business.

There are a few rare exceptions. I use Callwave for my incoming fax service. I get a toll number that I give to folks to send me faxes. The fax is converted to digital and sent to me as an email attachment I can read on my PC. Allows me to get faxes, even when I am traveling. Still a free service.
