Arctic Trip

This is a few months old, but I only found FT a couple months ago and thought I'd share this trip.
We left TVC in early September, DTW-MSP-YWG on Northwest. Overnighted at the FourPoints Winnipeg Airport Hotel. Very nice place. The lobby is about a 30 second walk from the airline check-in desks! Had a nice dinner at the FourPoints, then took a cab to one of the two local casino's. After making a donation, returned to the hotel and turned in. Next morning we had a 7:00 AM departure on Calm Air(they're an Air Canada partner, so I picked up some AeroPlan miles ). Hawker-Siddeley 748 TurboProp departed on time. We stopped over for 20-30 minutes each in Churchill, then in the Inuit communities of Arviat, Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet and Chesterfield Inlet. All are on Hudson Bay. Finally the last leg took us inland to Baker Lake, arriving at 3:30 PM. Stayed overnight at the Iglu Hotel - simple but clean place with about 20 rooms. Next day took us on a 100 mile boat trip to caribou hunting camp with the local Inuit. Spent several days hunting, hiking, photographing the arctic. It was fall and the weather was perfect, 50's during the day and 30's at night. Saw Arctic Fox, Arctic Hare, Bald Eagles, Prarie Dogs. There were Muskox in the area but we didn't see them. Finally 2 more nights in Baker Lake before heading home on the same route, this time flying to Winnipeg on a SAAB 340. Our time in Baker Lake was great, experiencing the local culture and meeting lots of very friendly local people.

We've travelled to the arctic several times and I can't get enough of it. It's not for everyone, but is a very unique experience and the chance to see a part of this planet that very few people ever will. A few people travel to this area each year to canoe two major rivers, the Thelon and Kazan. Other than that and a few hunters, most "visitors" are there with the government or the mining companies (who are doing a lot of exploring throughout the north). The only way there is by plane, and in the summer a few barges come in via Hudson bay with supplies. Nearest road was about 700-800 miles away!
