I don't think anyone here likes the surcharges. But they exist and it is still possible to get value from redeeming with BA. Disliking the BA charges and finding value in BA redemptions are not mutually exclusive.
Of course there are scenarios where redeeming miles is not the best option. But there are also scenarios where it is excellent value. This is often the case with J, F or last minute Y redemptions. The value either comes from saving cash that would otherwise be spent or experiencing something better (nicer cabin or greater flexibility) than would otherwise have been enjoyed. If the miles have been acquired by doing what you would have been doing anyway at no or little additional cost, what's not to like?
