Was that on an AC flight? They have a lot more power to do things on AC than on other airlines.
I would still think they're responsible for buying a revenue ticket for you though.
Just pick the flights you want, and say you have to be in Moscow 12 hours before that flight leaves, and you have to be in Bangkok, rested, 12 hours after that flight arrives. Tell them you've looked around, and found an option that works. And just keep escalating.
