In my opinion, the best way to use AA miles on BA is to redeem for first or business class and regard it as an opportunity to pay for economy, but travel in a premium cabin. It's not the free ticket a lot of people might have hoped for or even expected, but still close to something for nothing in my view. This is particularly so for the very many flyers who can afford economy fares, but find premium cabin fares prohibitive - they get to pay about what they would otherwise pay (often a bit less), but experience something nicer that would otherwise not be available to them.
