My take is that when in Japan if you try to eat same meals as you eat back in the U.S. then meals will be expensive. If you eat meals what local Japanese eats, which is not Sushi and Tempura, then meals can be surprisingly reasonable.
Taxi fare from Narita Airport to Tokyo metropolitan area is fixed fare. Taxi fare from Narita Airport to Shinjuku is 22,500 yen via Wangan Express Way, and 22,000 yen via Keio Express Way. Express Way toll is additional, where toll is 2,370 yen via Wangan Express Way, and 2,520 yen via Keio Express Way.
Yikes! I thought it would be be about $100US, in which case I probably would've gone for it. But $180-200 is too much.
Regarding food, I eat a fair amount of ramen here in Los Angeles area. A bowl goes for $8-10. I heard it would be $12+ in Japan. That must've been when $1US was Y85Yen.
