Always stayed in Osaka or outside Kyoto (half dozen trips) and had day trips to Kyoto. Wouldn't want to spent any night there.

Small crowds and no line up at Himeji back in April, weeks after the grand re-opening and cherry blossom finished. Lunch time 1 pm.
