On the other hand they can read/write very well in English, my impression is that in general Chinese find it easier to communicate in writing then verbally (I could be wrong on that point, it's just the impression I got from my Chinese friends)...
I must admit that I've never tried speaking English with them. I recommend the phone because they are fast and can handle most requests (refunds being a notable exception).
