CA didn't give me anything. A UA supervisor did after the first agent wanted to impose a charge. Originally a UA 1K agent couldn't book a connection at all, a supervisor found the 2 pm flight as the only CA flight she could book. CA has a history of canceling flights without good reason. I have been affected by this more than once. Sorry you have such limited experience in the US--at major airports you can find agents who speak the language you are most likely to need (this was not an issue for the crew). And at least 30% of the people on line to rebook for CA were not Chinese. And yes UA will give me a hotel if my flight is cancelled. <redacted>
