The downside from my understanding is that you need to go through twice the security check? By following the "connecting flight" you only need to go through one time the security check. But with only one carry on luggage, I guess if I knew that earlier, I would choose that shortcut. Thanks for the info.

BTW, the connecting flight we had was A52. I am not sure if that would change anything. Maybe we need to walk all the way to the other end of the terminal either way?
As a connecting passenger you should not need to know the trick to go landside but many regular travellers through FRA do this especially if they are connecting from non-Schengen to Schengen. You only need to go through passport control once and security once whichever route you follow. The only exception might be passengers arriving from the US (and occasionally from the UK) at a Z gate and connecting to a flight departing from an A gate as they don't need to clear security if staying airside.

A52 is right next to Z50 where you arrived but one floor below. They are some of the gates closest to central security and passport control. If you thought Z50 via security and passport control to A52 was a long walk, just imagine what it's like to connect from Z69 to A42! Lufthansa and Frankfurt Airport do their best to keep you fit!
