This is usually down to the fact that the UK doesnt have borderless travel to the EU, so a passport is required for entry, and could also be down to the regualtions of the country of entry.
I travel regularly to Schengen countries with BA. Never been a problem before. Ever. But maybe I've just been lucky.

With a departure at the crack of dawn, having to budget extra time for this isn't entirely trivial. To me. Although I appreciate I'm in a fortunate position to have a choice of check-in counters.
