mate, how was this allowed? Did you book this separately? 30 minutes is below the MCT.

It's possible you'll make it, but even as incredible as HKG as an airport, is I wouldn't risk a connection like that.

Especially since you're below the MCT, it's plainly going to be your fault - unless somehow they erroneously booked this through only giving you 30 minutes. If this connection is of your own making, you're going to be more at their mercy than if it's their fault. If the later flight ends up full that will suck, they certainly won't owe it to you. I would try to switch to that later KUL flight immediately.

As for ex-LAX: new beautiful terminal and all, LAX still cannot get it right. I waited 30+ minutes in the security line at TBIT (in the F/J line no less) last week before boarding a CX flight. If my experience is normal, then 80 minutes from an AA flight connecting will definitely be risky...especially if your inbound is delayed at all. Although I don't have enough experience with the new TBIT to know if my experience was an anomaly or normal.
