You just have to know that usairways.com only sells US-marketed flights. But Orbitz can sell AA-marketed flights on a US ticket, so hopefully the Orbitz receipt makes it clear. Rather a mess.

I hadn't noted that alaskaair.com says AA ticket stock is required. That's weird and very unusual for frequent flyer agreements; is it enforced in practice? And where does it say that? I see only "To ensure flight credit, the two letter airline code (AA) must precede the flight number (for example, AA XXXX) on your ticket receipt or boarding pass." (Of course, the whole AS program is unusual in its setup with the large number of partners who don't partner with each other.)
Hmmm could have sworn it mentioned ticket stock but do not see it when reading the AA page.

When you search for flights on US site it does not say operated by US. Is it different when you pull up a ticketed reservation? It's been a while since I did a full dummy reservation on US site. my old US Airways ticket receipt says Operated by AA on my AA leg. Although it's not a mixed metal itin.

Doing A quick orbitz search it does seem to be somewhat clear when booking if it's codeshare or not. I see some that say us airways and below says Operated by American and when it says American Airlines there is no operated by comment. It also shows the US logo on US marketed during the purchase process
