AIUI, some airlines do have a rule about making only two (or some other number) approaches to an airport before diverting. If I've understood it correctly, this is to do with trying to avoid the development of that dangerous phenomenon known as get-there-itis by preventing the conditions in which the crew can become fixated on the need to get it right this time.
Very interesting, although having such a rule could of itself lead to a form of get there itis if the flight crew try and land at second attempt when maybe they should have initiated a GA precisely because they knew that otherwise they would have to divert. Ultimately as a passenger I appreciate the professionalism of the crew and the focus on safety and if that means repeated GA's or diversions then so be it.
I've experienced a go around due to traffic on runway at LGW, a go around at VIE on OS (ages ago on an MD82) due to warning indication and a rather exciting touch and go at LCY on Citijet due to changing winds. On each occasion the second attempt was successful.
Funnily enough, I have never had a GA at LHR.
