My mother has seen this thread, and told me of a cab company in the Heathrow airport area, that has a number of female drivers, that can be requested in advance. Black cab drivers in London tend to be the safest, but also more expensive. I have heard that all 'mini-cabs' in London now require their driver to be vetted and carry official ID.

This assault problem was common over here, and I have witnessed this myself last christmas, when I was sat next to a cab in traffic on Hyde Park Corner and saw a lady banging on the window. I was in a car with three other guys and we followed the cab (I can't say chased, as it is London, and we were travelling 5mph). When we caught up at an intersection, we all got out and walked up to the cab. Seeing as we are all hefty guys, he opened the door and dropped her off. I know she got the guys number, but I have no idea if she followed it up, although we all urged her to.

A solution for all people coming to London. Call me and have me pick you up! I am cheap (will work for pizza) and will even wear my uniform! That or have my number to call.
