I was on an AB flight from DUS to JFK recently which had 2 aborted landings at JFK in a row. First time we started climbing again before I could see the runway. Announcement came from the flight deck that the wind had shifted, and that they needed to use another runway. Second time we broke through the cloud cover and I could see the actual runway below when suddenly (seconds from touching down) and abruptly landing was aborted, with apparently full throttle. The captain came on to say that they did not have a clear enough visual view of the runway. Weather was somewhat stormy but nothing extreme. Captain then said we now had to divert to PHL. Is that a fixed rule: two aborted landings means compulsory divert? I don't think there was any widespread flight disruption at JFK that day.
We landed at PHL and after about 15 minutes on the ground (not at gate), the purser (or whatever they are called on AB) came on and basically said 'we have no idea of what to do now. We have no contracts at this airport'. We stayed on the ground, in the plane for over two hours with minimal info, a candy bar and some water (in Y with two kids). Then announcement was that we would take off for JFK again, provided we get paperwork to the plane within 10 minutes, because otherwise the crew would reach the legal limit of working hours. Luckily we got away on time and got to JFK with a total delay of about 3.5 hours.
