Unless a family member is on some odd are deal/coupon where you are required to fly, whether you board or not is irrelevant.

Your bag will be checked to its final destination. Positive bag match for domestic flights ended in 2003, so 12 years ago. Presuming that the final destination is domestic, ignore the above about bag match.

Just don't board the connection (no such thing as a layover).
