When you have a meeting with at the client 9am, I do not want to risk to be late, just because the hotel could not manage the queues or their payment processer throws errors.
Moreover, this stupid DCC (dynamic currency conversion) issue usually does not incur when prepaying the reservation.
I always leave the key card in the room and just walk out (wondering if all the other people in suit have too much time waiting in the queue).
This might be true in the US.
You still need to check out because there *might* have been some room charges during your stay. The hotels that insist that guests check out won't make exceptions for this reason, even for prepaid rates. Also, in case there's a mistake, it's still easier to correct it before you leave the property.
