Not necessarily true. Not all properties negotiate, so often it is better to book through a TA. Why jump through hoops to negotiate for what an agent can easily get you?
Mind you, I also prefer to book directly, but do not do so if it means leaving substantial value on the table.

Of course. This information is the same one would provide when ordering products online or over the telephone. Obviously Virtuoso travel agents are not in the business of identity theft or credit card fraud...

I have many times. It is very easy to request an upgrade subject to availability at many hotels and resorts on direct bookings.
