Both situations happen every day. International departures from the 1-10 gates and domestic departures from the 50's and 60's. It all revolves around wide body vs. narrow body arrivals and departures and the desire to limit unnecessary aircraft towing.

You'll also see international arrivals in the domestic gates at peak times using PTVs and at least two domestic A330 arrivals turn at 50+ gates to TATL departures. There's a great deal of flexibility in gate use, for now.
