"
RELEASE OF LIABILITY
By acceptance of this travel certificate you release United; the operating carrier, and their respective employees, agents and representatives from any and all liability, claims or damages resulting or arising from the matters relating to your flight, compensation therefore or any related complaint.
"

So United certainly knows how to get a full release for miles or a small amount of money.
Your facts have nothing to do with the OP's post. You did not suffer an injury, but rather a minor customer service inconvenience. It's unlikely that there was any lawsuit you could have brought even if you want to.

OP's MIL could, on the other hand, have suffered some serious injury and now sue for some absurd sum.

The printed release on the certificate is just like the release on parking garage tickets. It's not worth the ink used to print it, but it likely stops a lot of people in their tracks.
