Booked a Flight That Was Taken Out Of Service

I had my family booked on a direct flight from CMH to ATL for an upcoming vacation in September. I received emails last night saying that one of the reservations was changed. I called SW this morning and they confirmed my fear - the flight we were on was removed from service and all passengers would eventually be automatically rebooked on other flights.

We're traveling with three small children who are first time flyers, and we were really banking on that direct flight. There are other options for direct flights if we want to change our travel schedule, but all the other options on the morning we were planning to leave have a pit stop. Has anyone else ever gone through this? I know there's not much I can do, but I'm interested in hearing other experiences and getting a feel for how often this happens. I was under the impression that once SW posted the flight schedules for sale that they were set (and one of the advantages of only listing several months out at a time).

FTers, lay your travel savvy knowledge on me!
