It can start from the USA, and continue round to say CPT or BKK via LHR, and then back again, provided it stays BA metal. Ditto ex Europe depatures such as DUB-LHR-HNL. You can just use it as a single even though it's a return. If you can squeeze in a LHR to SYD it can be very useful. So internally I value it at 50k Avios, though you can get a lot more out of it, provided I can actually use it.
Just be careful about leaving the return too close to the end of the one year + 355 days period or you will be unable to change it.
