I usually say I'm debating cancelling my card and that leads me to the retention department, but not the last two times with this card. I don't want to cancel my IHG card but I want the 15k offer. Wanted to verify even if I say I want to cancel my card they won't, will first transfer me to retention?
Before closing the card, they have to read a disclosure to you. So call, say you want to close. If they transfer you to retention department you're good. If they start reading the disclosure statement, stop them and say you changed your mind.
