I encountered other problems with the IBIS budget-hotel at AKL. They offer an enticing rate (in my case via otel.com), then charge extra for just about everything:
- breakfast is offered in the lobby - but if you want it, its $10 extra;
- no free WIFI - its $10 extra;
- late checkout? - its $10 extra per hour!
- airport shuttle? - its a bargain, only $6 extra!
Personally, I agree with your assessment. Avoid IBIS.

(The weird thing about this one is their expansion was a project sponsored by the AKL Airport Authority! Part of the solution - or - part of the problem?
