I find that near the end of the second year of life the cell phone battery's ability to hold a charge is way down - and that is what I truthfully report to Amex. It is Amex's choice to refund the whole cost of the phone - I would be happy to get an estimate on the battery replacement cost if they ask, but Amex chooses not to.

As far as the Purchase protection - I am well within the rules. I buy lots of stuff - and a minority of the things I choose to return. If I make up my mind within the store's refund period, I return it to the store. If it's later, I will use the Amex Return Protection. That is using it as intended - they offer the service so that you will buy (i.e., spend money), but with the extra incentive that you get more time to make up your mind.
