The "leftovers"? Your mother was pre-assigned one of the best Y seats on the plane. She pretty much could have asked anybody to switch with her and (if the person in her desired seat were travelling alone) the answer would almost certainly be yes. If not, the FA would have easily found someone willing to enjoy the extra leg room for free. I hope you realize now that it really wasn't anything for you (or her) to be concerned about.
