Sure it is always possible to request a different room type. Now whether the hotel management will open one up for you are not is a different issue.

I've made similar types of requests before and once in a while I'm successful, but more times than not the answer is no. But it doesn't hurt anything to ask. Call and try to speak with one of the hotel managers. It might work out for you.
