Last year I got an offer for a $100 statement credit. Earlier this year (before the AF hit), I got an offer of 10K miles after $3K spend w/in a month. AF just hit and I called again to ask about downgrading to a no fee card and was again offered the 10K miles for $3K spend, which I accepted (wasn't expecting it at all). I don't put much spend on this card, but have had it for ages. Most of my spend goes on the Presidential Plus card, for which I've also gotten pretty good annual retention bonuses.
As a data point, my wife asked about a retention bonus on her Explorer card and was flatly refused. She puts hardly any spend on it. AF will hit next month, so I told her to try again, otherwise cancel and churn.
