I've done this multiple times. Called the EXP line and told them "I am on XXXX flight flying through YYY city on ZZZZ date and weather at my connection airport looks like its gonna be awful. Everytime they have accommodated me on different flights (all AA of course) through an alternative connection airport with no problems and no change fees.
