Since we plan to only visit the park for one day I'm thinking of staying somewhere nearby and just driving in and out of the park on the same day. Problem is that LA is 4+ hours away by car so I'm hoping somebody has some suggestions for nice hotels that are closer to the park. I have points with Hilton, SPG, Hyatt, and Club Carlson. Thanks!
None of those programs has any property close by. Check to be sure, but as I recall the only chain hotel that I'm aware of directly near the parks is a Choice Hotels property in Three Rivers.
Visalia might have a couple of places but it's a bit farther away than Three Rivers, and I'm guessing you want to be arrive as close as possible the night prior to maximize sightseeing time.
Especially with only one day you'll just scratch the surface of Sequoia and Kings Canyon, so I'd probably stay in park lodging to get as much time in as possible.
Consider flying into FAT instead of LAX, if the reduced drive time would afford you more time to visit the parks.
