PS the reason I know it is a chip and PIN related problem is the message on the POS was that the only non-chip and PIN cards accepted are Argos cards. The system simply did not bother parsing the CVM list far enough to even see if their was a PIN it could use. I know this is Argos' fault. But as a customer all I can think is "it would be nice if the card companies fixed this."

Though, I must say, I'm very glad I got the HSBC card. Having contactless eliminates 90% of the issues in London at least.
Technically an attended terminal rejected your card, which is even worse than the unattended kiosk problems that crop up from time to time. I say they should be reported to Visa/MC--if they don't know, they won't fix (card or otherwise).

The CVM order change by USAA, plus a frustrating experience dealing with AFCU's antiquated processes and Chase's waffling on when they will implement PIN preference, have convinced me not to run after any more promised Chip+PIN cards until things settle down a bit - at least until a few months after the October "event" coming up.
Too bad Diner's Club still hasn't reopened apps. UNFCU seems like a safe bet though, especially since the Elite has no FTF now.
