Maybe a silly question, but if you check in online and dont arrive, could the hotel not realise that you havent shown up?

I know they have to issue a key etc but could the system show you as staying and issue points etc. even if you havent actually been there?

Are the systems that sophisticated that they pick up that a key has not been issued even though the room has been checked in and allocated?
