HUCA works!
On the first call, I got a foreign rep and I asked him about offers on my account. He instead started babbling about how to redeem miles. I hung up on him.
I called back again and got a nice foreign lady who understood what I was talking about. She transferred me to a US based rep. I was careful not to use the word "cancel" in my conversation. Last time a US based rep cancelled my account right away. This time I simply asked for offers to keep my account open. So these are the offers I got.
1. Us Air: waiver of annual fee. Accepted. Open since 4/2012. Haven't paid AF. Around $5k spend. 10k annual bonus miles posted last month.
2. lufthansa: 5000 bonus miles or credit line increase. Took 5k bonus miles. $79 is a high price to pay for those miles but I want to stay on good terms with barclays. Spent around $10k total in last year.
3. travelocity: $39 AF waiver or 5000 bonus points. 5k bonus points are worth $100 so I took that. Must have spent around $10k on travelocity tickets alone in last year (for friends and family as well).
4. arrival: My anniversary was in January and I was hoping they would give me 5k miles or something. No offer. It was worth asking.
Overall a very productive 15 minutes.
