I'm surprised it's not 3-3-3 – is the upper deck really too narrow even for that? I'm not sure whether EK decided not to squeeze in 3-3-3 in order to avoid complaints about a cramped layout (like the 777), or if there are other reasons (payload? Regulations on the maximum number of passengers on a plane?).
Either way, the upper deck looks like a good option. I'd be curious to see the seat width / pitch measurements. But crikey, that's a lot of people on one plane. You wouldn't want to be at the back of that immigration queue!
