Nobody wants to make this easier because the people who spend time to read and comprehend the process know that it can be somewhat simple once you know what to look for.
However, as a newbie, it would be nice to know around what year (or page) the old tricks stopped working and new methods developed. I've been chipping away at this for a week now in my spare time and picked up on the old basics but I have no idea if those tricks from late 2009/early 2010 still work. (When I have tried they haven't seemed to but that could be because I'm still very new at this)
Tricks stop and start again all the time and will often change in lipo capabilities, as was mentioned just a couple pages back. Just because you can't find it working doesn't mean it is dead, you just might not be looking at the right ota/airport/timing/destination/etc. (for both your strike/strikes and your main itin). Keep working though 50% is relatively easy for most flights and for some is the optimal savings.
