Again, did this in March. There was $6 extra in taxes, no other fees.
AA does not charge fee but AFAIK, AS does. So if this is AS, then it is a big improvement.

Were you still outside the 60 days window? Everything is free outside the 60 days window including cancellation. Inside the window everything costs you unless you are the top elites.
