Usually on a flight like this a Y/B/M fare would be thousands of dollars more than a V fare, not hundreds, and even then there's no guarantee you can confirm the upgrade in advance. Probably not worth it to buy the more expensive coach fare. Plus you can't upgrade any flights that are operated by KLM as part of your itinerary this way.

You may want to see if you can find a routing on KLM for the overseas flight -- they also offer a Comfort+ product (though confusingly I think theirs is still called Economy Comfort, as Delta's used to be), but with even greater extra recline; I find KLM's Economy Comfort to actually be very comfortable for a fairly modest price premium, especially on their 747s which have Economy Comfort in a separate cabin.
