As to the dirty lavs (especially in long-haul J), it's a tough call. In my experience, both Asian and European carriers seem to see to it that lavs are kept fresh and clean throughout flights, with some Asian carriers in particular discreetly having a FA tidy up after each passenger uses the lav. This may not be absolutely necessary, but the truth is, the state of AA lavs toward the end of a long-haul flight can be (and too often is) absolutely disgraceful. I have used the ladies' room toward the end of the JFK-EZE (and vice-versa) route, and it looked like a frat house bathroom. On a Saturday morning. During rush.
I was considering disinfecting my boots before entering my hotel room, or better yet, throwing them away, giving me an excuse to buy a new pair in Bs As.
In any event, there has to be some middle ground between cleaning up after every passenger and not cleaning those bathrooms during a long-haul flight at all.
Interesting. I've been heard complimenting how well the Us and EU based carriers keep the lavs from deteriating into a vile, smelly Port-a-loo. After a few long flights late last year with Etihad and Jet, I actually pondered whether I'd start carrying Depends on my flights.
