All you can do in Italy is go with the flow. Except for certain holidays, you don't need to buy a train ticket in advance, so I've never done so. I buy a ticket at the station, this way, I go when I get there.
It may be cheaper to buy in advance. Although we're talking two days out now, so Base might be the only available fare.
