Others may be able to speak to the specifics, but there are some limitations in streaming when wifi isn't available (i.e. outside of the continental US). The content is stored on the plane locally but IIRC the wifi connection is needed to authenticate your eligibility for free/paid content.
Best suggestion is to rent a few before you leave home/hotel.
Also device compatibility is an issue, so make sure your tablet is supported.
