You said "most credit cards", I'll take it a step further...I know of NO credit card that offers ANY "automatic" liability insurance coverage

I don't know of any available to U.S. residents, but I believe that Amex's international dollar-denominated Platinum card, issued out of the U.K., offers such coverage. That card is not offered to U.S. residents.
