I used UA miles to redeem this trip for the record. My last resort would be filing a charge back with AMEX for the baggage charge.

BTW, is it possible to receive monetary compensation for the flight cancellation under EU rules?

This has happened to me in the pasted. Just fill out the form and you should get a credit for your bag charge.
