So I decided to do a pseudo booking for the same flights on KLM and see if I could pick seats. To my surprise when I went through the process of booking the same itinerary I saw some 40 seats empty including comfort, preferred etc and even a few aisle seats in regular seating at the back of the aircraft.

So my question is how should I go about at least getting an aisle seat. Should I use the Delta Platinum line or call KLM. I have no problem paying for a comfort economy seat on KLM. In the future should I make my booking on KLM web site instead of Delta web site?

thanks for your insight.
If you mean you have DL-coded flights on KL metal, then good luck winning this battle. Delta will (1) say there are no seats available and come back at check-in or (2) point at KLM; KLM will either (1) point at Delta, (2) say there are no seats available and come back at check-in, or (3) say there's nothing they could do and they are working on this problem. For years. Yeah. Working.

I had same problems as you and I'd love to hear if there are any positive changes.

The only solution I got is asking DL to reissue ticket so that KL segments would show with KL flight numbers. After that, you're good to go - all seats, including EC, will be available. But be aware that not every agent is willing to do that.
