Panama City (PTY) is a small airport and very easy for international connections. Assuming a reasonable schedule Auckland to Quito/Guayaquil via Los Angeles and Panama City may be easier than via Houston or Buenos Aires.

However the shortest option is LAN which actually flies to Galapagos and Auckland.
