Well, its mostly a tropical country with lots of moisture, so there is not much dust that is vacuumable like in Europe, but you have to literally wipe it up to effectively remove it. In cities most of the 'dust' is precipitated pollution, ie dust from coal fired household cooking mixed with diesel soot. The floors in my mothers place in CCU gets a daily regimen of vacuum, wiping with soapy water etc in the morning, and by the afternoon if you walk barefoot in the house you have black feet again.
Since no one really knows vacuum cleaners they are handled pretty rough and give up after a while. What really kills them is the switching off by pulling the plug while it is running.
