Even ignoring the extra status levels in the Qantas programme, i've always liked the fact there are other "rewards" as you gain more status credits (in the form of Qantas points).
Beyond 2400 status points (a banked year, which I almost always hit), there's really only the Elite gift at 3000 status points, which is a lot more points for not a particularly great reward.
Which is why as much as possible I credit any NZ long haul and high fare bucket domestic flights to Velocity rather than Airpoints. I'd much rather have Velocity Gold status (and hopefully Platinum) rather than the Elite gift and nothing beyond that.

The low value TT are good value when applied to velocity
