While not disagreeing with anything (apart from the tone of the 'bridge and tunnel' reference), to put things into perspective for the OP - it's a 5 minute walk from Mercer Street to Leicester Square.
It is also, at a decent pace, a 5 minute walk from Leicester Square to The Mayfair! The Leicester Square issue is not the location per se but the fact that the square is full of drunk people for much of the night.
