Shortly after the fire the workers in T3 threatened to strike because they felt the air was toxic. Multiple federal agencies assured them that the air was safe, and T3 was opened a week and a half after the fire to allow use of the D gates. Yesterday the government seized the D gates area due to carcinogens and other poisons in the air.

Fire in Rome, prosecutors seize the D gates area.

La decisione, secondo quanto trapela, dopo che l'Arpa, l'agenzia regionale per l'ambiente, ha riscontrato la presenza di diossina e altre sostante tossiche nell'aria.

The decision occurred after Arpa, the regional agency in charge of the environment, found the presence of dioxin and other toxic substances in the air.

La procura di Civitavecchia ha disposto il sequestro preventivo del molo D del Terminal 3 dell'aeroporto di Fiumicino, misura eseguita nel tardo pomeriggio di martedì 26 maggio dalla Polaria. Dopo l'incendio dello scorso 7 maggio che ha colpito il Terminal 3 dello scalo, il molo D era stato chiuso e successivamente riaperto il 18 maggio. Il via libera alla riapertura era stato dato «non riscontrando alcun rischio per la salute di lavoratori e passeggeri» al termine di una riunione svolta presso la sede della direzione Sistema Aeroporti Lazio dell'Enac che ha coinvolto tutti gli attori aeroportuali e un rappresentante dell'Asl RmD. Secondo quanto trapelato, però, le ultime analisi effettuate dall'Arpa, l'Agenzia regionale per l'ambiente, avrebbero riscontrato la presenza di diossina di dieci volte superiore ai limiti di legge.

The prosecutor of Civitavecchia ordered the seizure of the D gates area of Terminal 3 of FCO late afternoon on Tuesday May 26. After the May 7th fire that struck the airport the D gates were closed, then reopened on May 18th. The way to reopening occurred with the statement, "We found that there is no risk to the health of workers or passengers," by ENAC, the civil aviation agency in charge of the airport, which issued a joint statement in conjunction with all other agencies that have to do with the Rome airport. But what actually transpired was that the agency in charge of the environment had discovered the presence of dioxin at a level 10 times higher than the legal limit.

La decisione della procura è stata presa dunque dopo che le rilevazioni dell'Arpa hanno permesso di riscontrare nell'aria la presenza di sostanze tossiche e cancerogene, situazione «potenzialmente rischiosa per la salute di chi frequenta i locali del Terminal C». Sui dati, però, ancora non c'è chiarezza: i sindacati, in particolare l'Usb, fin dal giorno successivo all'incendio avevano denunciato la situazione di rischio a cui sarebbero esposti lavoratori dell'aeroporto e passeggeri. L'Asl Roma D, competente a livello territoriale, a questo punto ha rimesso la valutazione dei dati rilevati dall'Arpa all'Istituto superiore della sanità, per valutare le eventuali misure da prendere. E anche l'Enac, l'Ente nazionale per l'aviazione civile, ha chiesto all'Istituto di sanità un parere. Proprio da questo quadro di incertezza sarebbe maturata la decisione della procura circa il sequestro preventivo del molo D.

The decision of the prosecutor was made after Arpa, the environmental agency detected toxic and carcinogenic substances in the air and said, "There is a potential risk to the health of those who frequent Terminal C." As of today, the situation is still not clear. The workers union, right after the fire, denounced the situation as risky to passengers and workers. The responsible agency L'Asi Roma D put the matter into the hands of Arpa, the Higher Institute of Health to decide what measures to take. ENAC, the civil aviation authority that governs the airport, also asked Arpa for an opinion. Out of this uncertainty came the decision to seize the D gates.

Il sequestro del molo D, se confermato, rischia di influenzare pesantemente l'operatività dello scalo romano, peraltro nel periodo di intenso traffico di fine primavera, inizio estate. I vertici di Adr, la società che gestisce gli aeroporti romani, secondo quanto trapela stanno cercando di predisporre un piano d'emergenza per cercare di limitare i disagi per i passeggeri.

The seizure of the D gate area, if confirmed, has a risk of heavily influencing the operations of the airport during the Spring and early summer high season. It was leaked that the society that manages the airport is trying to put together an emergency plan to limit the disruption and inconvenience to passengers during that time.
